The impact of mobile phone use on driver behavior

On Behalf of | Mar 1, 2024 | Car Accidents |

When operating a vehicle, a driver’s primary concern should be the task at hand. This means that he or she should solely focus on the safe operation of the vehicle and the rules of the road. Putting the phone aside while driving is a critical part of safe driving, yet many drivers continue to use their mobile devices while behind the wheel. Phone use can have a significant impact on driver behavior, even if the driver is unaware of it.

Phone use is one of the most common contributing factors to car accidents. Distracted driving has become a leading cause of death, one that would significantly reduce if drivers would simply avoid looking at or using their phones while driving. It is important not to underestimate the impact that even a few moments of distraction can have on personal safety and the safety of others.

What counts as distraction?

Phones are the primary source of distraction. This includes talking on the phone, scrolling social media, using hands-free devices, texting and more. Even inputting an address into a GPS or listening to verbal driving directions can be dangerously distracting. Other types of distraction include looking at a billboard, talking with a passenger, eating or drinking, or adjusting the radio. These are all seemingly innocuous things, but when done behind the wheel, they can have devastating consequences.

The effects of distraction

Distraction in any form can take a driver’s attention from the task at hand. It can cause his or her mind to wander and to think about things other than safe driving. Certain types of distraction, particularly phone use, can cause a driver to take his or her hands off the wheel for several seconds at a time. Distractions may also cause a driver to look away from the road for long periods. Phone use is especially dangerous because it can cause all of these things at once.

After a distraction-related accident

If you are the victim of a distraction-related accident, you may have legal options available to you. The Texas civil justice system offers you a way to seek justice through a claim against the responsible party. While this cannot undo what you experienced or reverse your pain, it can allow you to secure the resources you need in order to move forward.
