Understanding the common causes of traffic crashes

On Behalf of | Feb 13, 2024 | Car Accidents |

Motor vehicle accidents can happen to anyone. However, understanding the common causes can help drivers prevent them.

From distracted driving to drowsiness, these accidents happen for various reasons. Sadly, the consequences of a traffic crash can prove devastating.

Distracted driving, speeding and intoxication

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of accidents today. Texting, talking on the phone, eating or even daydreaming while driving can take one’s attention away from the road, leading to disastrous consequences. Exceeding the speed limit is not only illegal but also increases the risk of accidents. When people drive too fast, it becomes harder to control the vehicle, react to unexpected situations, and stop in time. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding accidents resulted in more than 12,300 deaths over the course of 2021.

Alcohol impairs judgment, coordination and reaction time, making it extremely dangerous to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol. Those who plan on drinking should have a designated driver or use alternative transportation.

Recklessness, weather and fatigue

Reckless driving includes aggressive behaviors like tailgating, changing lanes without signaling and disregarding traffic signs or signals. Reckless drivers put themselves and others at risk. Rain, snow, fog and ice can make the roads slippery and decrease visibility, leading to accidents. It is important to adjust driving habits and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles during inclement weather.

Driving while tired can be as dangerous as driving under the influence. With fatigue, reaction time slows down, and people may even fall asleep at the wheel. It is necessary to get enough rest before embarking on long trips. By being aware of these common causes, drivers can take steps to prevent motor vehicle accidents. Prioritizing safety on the road can reduce the prevalence of traffic crash injuries and save lives.
