While most drivers try to use caution when traveling on Texas roadways, others don’t obey the laws, creating hazardous conditions for responsible drivers. When someone drives under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they put themselves and everyone else on the road at risk. Sadly, many DWI accidents end in serious injuries or fatalities to innocent victims. A family has been facing the repercussions of losing a loved one in a DWI accident for over three years, and they found no solace in the recent sentencing of the driver at fault.
A life cut short
The accident victim was riding a motorcycle and was traveling toward the intersection of Duncanville Road and Ranchero Lane in Dallas. A man driving a pickup truck drove through the intersection and into the path of the motorcycle. The victim was not able to stop or avoid colliding with the truck. Sadly, he passed away at the scene.
The pickup driver already had two DWI convictions. With his third DWI conviction, he was facing up to 20 years in prison. Instead of facing extended prison time, the judge ordered him to attend a six-month prison alcohol treatment program. The victim’s family believes this sentence was too lenient.
Legal help when a loved one dies in a car accident
Losing a loved one in an accident where the other driver was negligent, especially when intoxication is a factor, can leave a family looking for answers. While nothing can bring back a loved one, the family may wish to seek justice through the civil court system. Texas families can file a lawsuit against the party deemed negligent for restitution when a loved one is killed in an accident.
