Preventing heat-related workplace illnesses

On Behalf of | Aug 7, 2023 | Workplace Accidents |

Texas workers who perform jobs outside are at risk of developing heat-related illnesses. Extreme temperatures can cause heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and other health concerns. The symptoms of these conditions aren’t always visible if one doesn’t know what to look for. That’s why it’s important for those who work outdoors to know what to look for to help prevent themselves and their co-workers from suffering from a heat-related illness.

Understanding heat-related illnesses

Anyone who works outdoors in extreme temperatures, or indoors where air conditioning is not available, is at risk of a heat-related illness. Some common signs of these conditions include dizziness, confusion, headaches, and fatigue. When one spots these symptoms in themselves or another person, it’s important to act quickly by providing first aid as needed. In some cases, one may need to call emergency services for help.

Heat-related illnesses are generally preventable when one takes the proper precautions. Workers should be allowed to take frequent breaks to rehydrate and rest in a shady area. It’s also important that workers have constant access to water or an electrolyte drink to help them cool down and avoid overheating. Slowly acclimating to working in extreme temperatures can also help prevent these conditions.

Workplace illnesses can be devastating

When one is injured at work, they may be required to recuperate for a lengthy period, which can cause financial strain. Heat-related illnesses and other workplace injuries can leave one with costly medical bills and other expenses. Texas workers who are injured on the job should be aware that they have rights. In some cases, workers may have the option to file a civil lawsuit for compensation to help recover damages related to their injury.
