Most drivers don’t understand the danger of distraction

On Behalf of | Jul 30, 2023 | Car Accidents |

When behind the wheel, a driver’s primary responsibility is to focus on the task at hand and adhere to rules of the road. Failure to do this can increase the chance of a crash, and it can place every other person on the road at risk as well. One of the most common reasons for car accidents in Texas and across the United States is distraction, which grew into a more pressing safety concern as more drivers got smartphones and purchased cars with high levels of technological integration.

Distracted driving can come in many different forms, and drivers are often unaware of the ways that their minds may not be focused on what they are doing. Drivers often assume they can safely multitask, but the reality is that people cannot. Even a single moment of distraction can have devastating consequences, and each Texas driver is responsible for the choices he or she makes while behind the wheel.

The sobering truth about distraction

In 2021, approximately 3,500 people lost their lives in accidents caused by distracted driving. Many more suffered injuries or were left with significant damage to their personal property. Phone use is the primary source of distracted driving, but distraction can also happen due to in-car technology, eating or drinking, talking with a passenger or even looking at a passing billboard. Distracted driving for any reason and in any form is incredibly dangerous, but most drivers are unaware of the risk they are taking when they engage in this activity.

Studies found that a driver’s mind remains distracted for over a minute after they stop engaging in the distracting behavior. The mind may take longer to regain focus, which means that the actual number of distraction-related accidents in the U.S. may be higher than previously thought. Safety advocates say these new findings only underline the need for stricter distracted driving laws.

Are you a victim?

If you are the victim of an accident caused by a distracted driver, you do not have to face the repercussions of this event alone. The Texas civil justice system provides you with an opportunity to seek compensation and recovery for your losses through a civil claim. You may benefit from seeking an understanding of your legal options and the steps you can take to pursue justice and secure what you need to move forward after a traumatic car accident.
