The serious implications of head-on collisions

On Behalf of | Jan 27, 2023 | Car Accidents |

Car accidents have the potential to leave Texas motorists and passengers with serious injuries, damage to personal property and other complications. Head-on collisions are a type of crash that often result in serious injuries for those involved. Even at a low rate of speed, a head-on crash can cause grave damage and debilitating harm. According to the Insurance Information Institute, these types of crashes account for approximately 10% of all collisions.

A head-on accident is a full-frontal crash of two vehicles traveling in different directions. Because of the opposing direction of the two vehicles, these crashes create a significant amount of force, making them some of the most dangerous types of collisions. If you are suffering after this type of accident, you may be the victim of the reckless or negligent actions of another person.

What causes head-on collisions?

Head-on collisions are often the result of preventable factors, such as speeding or inattentive driving. In most situations, one of the drivers is at fault for the crash. While there are many different things that can contribute to the likelihood of this type of collision, some of the most common reasons that a head-on crash can happen include:

  • Improper passing – If a driver going the opposite direction crosses the yellow line at the wrong time, it could result in a head-on crash with a vehicle in the other lane.
  • Distracted or intoxicated – A driver who is distracted or intoxicated may swerve and have difficulty maintaining his or her lane, possibly moving into oncoming traffic.
  • Driver fatigue – A driver who is overly tired may zone out or even fall asleep, leading to a higher likelihood that the driver will enter the other lane.
  • Reckless driving – Drivers who are being reckless, aggressive or inattentive may be more likely to swerve into oncoming traffic.

These types of accidents can result in a range of injuries, including broken bones, traumatic brain injury, harm to the face or neck, whiplash, spinal cord injuries and more. The severity of the injuries may depend on the speed the vehicles were traveling at the time of the collision.

What are your options?

If the actions of another driver contributed to the head-on accident that left you injured, there are legal options available to you. You may have grounds to pursue legal action through a civil claim, an option that could allow you to recoup your accident-related losses and damages. After a head-on crash, you may benefit from seeking guidance regarding the best course of action for you.
