How you can get your teen to be focused while driving

Like most kids in Texas, your teen cannot wait to get his or her driver’s license. While most are excited about the freedom and independence it may bring, they often do not thoroughly consider the great responsibility and potential liability, too. What is the best way to impress upon your child the importance of focused driving?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, the leading cause of death for teens in the United States is motor vehicle crashes. In fact, in 2016, each day six teens between the ages of 16 and 19 died in an automobile accident, and during that same period there were just short of 300,000 injuries attributable to the same. With such high rates of death and injury, it is imperative to help your teen prevent getting into car crashes.

Keeping an open dialogue with your child, even before they have their learner’s permit in hand, is the best way to have successful discussions with them about being a safe driver. Impress upon your teen how dangerous all distracted driving behaviors are. Remind them on a regular basis that texting or looking at a mobile device while driving is never acceptable.

Also remember that you are your child’s first teacher. Be a good example on the road. Start by putting on your seat belt as soon as you get in the car, input GPS directions before you start driving, and never glance at your phone unless you are safely pulled over on the side of the road.
