Are rideshare services making accidents more commonplace?

On Behalf of | Aug 30, 2024 | Uber/Lyft Ridesharing Accidents |

Rideshare services have become a popular way to get around in Texas, due largely to their convenience and affordability. However, as the number of rideshare drivers on the road increases, there may be a correlation with the potential for major crashes.

Many Texans are beginning to ask whether these services are contributing to a rise in car accidents.

Why are rideshare accidents so common?

One common cause of rideshare accidents is the pressure on drivers. Many drivers work long hours to maximize earnings, which can lead to fatigue. Driving while tired increases the risk of accidents as reaction times slow down and concentration wanes.

Additionally, rideshare drivers often face the challenge of navigating unfamiliar routes. This can lead to sudden stops, erratic driving or missed turns, all of which can increase the likelihood of an accident.

Another factor is the distraction from rideshare apps. Drivers must use their phones to accept rides, follow directions and communicate with passengers. This constant need to interact with a mobile device can distract drivers from the road. Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of accidents, and rideshare drivers are particularly vulnerable to this risk due to their reliance on technology.

Are rideshare services affecting other drivers?

The increase in rideshare vehicles on the road also contributes to traffic congestion, especially in urban areas like San Antonio. More cars on the road mean more opportunities for accidents to occur. Rideshare drivers often need to stop in inconvenient or unsafe locations to pick up or drop off passengers, which can disrupt the flow of traffic and lead to rear-end collisions or other types of accidents.

The Texas Department of Transportation reports that there were 4,283 traffic deaths in 2023. This is an increase of over 1,000 annual deaths compared to 12 years prior, before the launch of rideshare services like Lyft. While it is impossible to pin the blame entirely on rideshare services, it does go without saying that everyone on the road should be aware of the potential risks that rideshare services can sometimes present.
