Common workplace injuries in office settings

On Behalf of | Jun 3, 2024 | Workplace Accidents |

Workplace injuries don’t just happen in factories and construction sites. Offices also pose unique risks that may lead to workplace injuries. Understanding possible injury types can prevent them from occurring, which helps protect employees at work.

Repetitive strain injuries

Repetitive strain injuries (RSIs) are some of the most common in office settings. They occur when the same motion is repeated frequently, such as typing or using a mouse. Over time, the strain can damage muscles, tendons, and nerves. Tendonitis, carpal tunnel, and bursitis are typical RSIs.

Slip and fall accidents

Slips, trips, and falls are prevalent in offices as well. They often occur due to wet floors, loose carpets, or cluttered walkways. Slipping on wet surfaces, tripping over electric cords, and falling from stairs are a few examples of these incidents.

Ergonomic injuries

Improper workstation arrangements lead to ergonomic injuries. A range of musculoskeletal issues can arise from poor posture and improper desk setups. For example, an individual may experience back pain from a poorly adjusted chair or eye strain from screen glare.

Stress-related injuries

High stress levels in the workplace can lead to physical and psychological injuries. Stress can cause tension headaches, insomnia, and even worsen conditions like hypertension.

Cuts and bruises

Even in an office, minor cuts and bruises are relatively common. These injuries can result from mishandling office equipment or simple accidents. Paper cuts, cuts from sharp office tools, or bruising due to bumping office furniture occur somewhat regularly.

Ensuring a safe office environment involves more than addressing obvious hazards. Regular ergonomic assessments, maintaining a clutter-free workspace, and promoting stress management strategies are vital in reducing the risk of these common office injuries.
