What happens in the aftermath of a traumatic amputation?

On Behalf of | Jul 24, 2020 | Uncategorized |

One of the most catastrophic injuries you could suffer in a motor vehicle accident is a traumatic amputation of a limb. This type of injury will undoubtedly change nearly every aspect of your life forever.

The first order of business is to stabilize you and get you to a hospital. Obviously, you will require surgery in order to treat your injury. Thereafter, you will begin the journey to adjusting to your new life and new body.

Creating a rehabilitation program just for you

Even though many of the aspects of your rehabilitation program are common to everyone, the medical and other professionals working with you will tailor your plan to fit your needs. Several factors are taken into consideration when creating your plan, such as your overall health, the severity, location and degree of your injury, and the challenges you will face as a result. The goals of your plan include the following:

  • Giving you as much independence as possible
  • Helping you improve your motor skills
  • Restoring your ability to perform tasks required in daily life
  • Providing you treatment options to improve your physical healing
  • Providing you access to the emotional support you need
  • Educating you and your family regarding your condition and what it means for your future
  • Fitting you for a prosthetic
  • Providing you with other devices you may need to improve your independence
  • Helping you with the management of your pain both in the short and long-term
  • Counseling you on the appropriate nutrition to optimize your health and healing
  • Making adaptations to your home environment to accommodate your condition
  • Teaching you exercises to help improve your muscle control, strength and endurance
  • Providing you with vocational counseling if you will need to change careers in light of your injury

As you can see, your rehabilitation plan will involve many aspects and involve a variety of medical and other individuals. In addition, your recovery will not be quick. It could take several months or even years for you to reach maximum independence and to adjust to your new life. During at least part of this time, you will probably not be able to work and will incur a significant amount of medical and other expenses related to your injury.

If another person’s actions led to your traumatic amputation, you may find it beneficial to pursue compensation that could help with your current and future health care needs. In order to increase your chances of receiving the maximum amount of restitution available, it may be worthwhile to consult with an experienced Texas attorney to gain an understanding of your rights and legal options going forward.
