Older drivers and new technology are not a safe combination

On Behalf of | Aug 1, 2019 | Uncategorized |

Older people often struggle with learning how to use new technology such as smartphones. In-car technology is no exception to this, yet many newer vehicles come with more advanced features than ever before, including built-in navigation, Bluetooth connectivity with phones and voice controlled operations.

Infotainment systems are growing in popularity as well, but they can also be quite dangerous. Studies show that older drivers are more prone to pay attention to these features while driving, and they are more likely to look away from the road for longer stretches of time. Like many others, you may associate distracted driving with phone use, but in many cases, hands-free features can be just as distracting as reading a text or typing an email.

Understanding the problem

The problem with distracted driving is not limited to one age group. Drivers of all ages are susceptible to the temptation of picking up their phones, eating while driving and engaging in other distracting behaviors while driving their vehicles. However, studies found that different age groups are prone to interact with distracting things in different ways. Consider the following about older drivers:

  • Seniors are more prone to struggle with using and navigating certain types of in-car technology.
  • Drivers will often shift their glances for long periods of time to look at a dashboard screen.
  • Drivers age 55 and up were slower by eight seconds than millennials when using in-car technology to make phone calls or do other things.
  • Even technology using voice commands can be distracting and cause drivers to pay attention to things besides driving.

No matter the age of the person behind the wheel, he or she is responsible for choices made. Each Texas driver should make the choice to put their phones down, avoid unnecessary tasks while driving and focus on arriving at their destination safely.

What are you options if you are in an accident?

If you are in an accident and you believe a distracted driver is to blame, you have options. You may be able to seek compensation for your losses through a personal injury claim, which can help you claim restitution and allow you to hold the liable parties accountable.

An assessment of your case can help you understand what options are available to you, and you may find it beneficial to move forward with this as soon as possible after an accident. You do not have to navigate the aftermath of your auto collision alone.
