What can I do to avoid road rage?

On Behalf of | May 5, 2019 | Car Accidents |

Many drivers often find themselves falling victim to road rage. This occurs when you let the frustrations of driving get to you, which can lead to some aggressive and dangerous behaviors. Avoiding road rage is crucial, whether it’s curbing behaviors affecting your own driving or avoiding other motorists who are driving aggressively. Geico offers the following tips on how you can do just that.

The first step is to understand what road rage entails. There are a number of behaviors that can be dangerous when behind the wheel, including tailgating. This occurs when one driver follows too closely behind another, which can lead to rear-end accidents. A driver may also cut off another vehicle on purpose or weave through lanes aggressively. Even yelling at another driver or making angry gestures constitutes aggressive driving, since it could ultimately lead to an accident or altercation.

You should also be aware of the factors that may contribute to road rage. Driving in traffic can be stressful, especially when you’re running late. Many drivers also feel insulated in their vehicles, which can cause them to do things they wouldn’t normally. Additionally, some people don’t take traffic laws seriously, which causes them to behave in such ways that endanger others.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to be a better, more compassionate driver. If the issue is lateness, make sure you leave early enough that you won’t have to rush to get to where you’re going. Also, try to use your horn judiciously. Blasting it at other vehicles only serves to increase tension and cause anger. You should also know what to do if you encounter another aggressive driver. Your best bet is to remove yourself from the situation. If another driver is tailgating you, change lanes and allow the vehicle to pass. No matter what, never get out of your vehicle to confront another driver. If you truly feel threatened, stay in your car and call the police for assistance.
