Health hazards associated with asbestos exposure

On Behalf of | Oct 6, 2018 | Workplace Accidents |

If you work in the construction industry in San Antonio, you probably face numerous hazards on a daily basis. Some of these hazards may be less obvious, such as the damage that can occur when exposed to asbestos over a long period of time. The following information details the kind of health problems that asbestos may cause, as well as how you can protect yourself and hold your employer accountable.

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, asbestos exposure is associated with a few different health conditions, some of which can be rather serious. Lung cancer causes malignant tumors to form that can block airways. When asbestos exposure is combined with smoking, the risk of developing lung cancer is even greater.

Mesothelioma is another type of cancer associated with asbestos, which impacts the lining of the lungs and chest cavity, also known as pleura. Pleural disease may also occur. In this case, asbestos exposure causes pleura to thicken or results in a build-up of fluid around the lungs, which can cause breathing problems.

If you’re concerned about asbestos exposure at your place of work, the National Cancer Institute recommends addressing the issue with your employer, as well as your fellow workers. Employers are required to provide safety gear when health hazards exist on the job, and it’s essential that workers use these items as necessary. If the issue is not resolved, workers are encouraged to contact the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA will perform an inspection of your workplace, as well as hold your employer accountable if the proper safety measures aren’t in place.
