The reasons for wanting to avoid a car accident are endless. Though you certainly do not carry out actions to purposefully put yourself at risk of being involved in a car accident, the actions of others could easily cause serious crashes. Unfortunately, you or any of your loved ones could suffer serious or fatal injuries in a vehicle collision.

If you want to do your best to avoid accidents and help any of your loved ones practice safe driving, you may want to understand the various types of car crashes. It may also prove important to remember that not every accident involves more than one vehicle.

Common types of crashes

You have undoubtedly seen your fair share of accidents while out on the roads. You may have noticed that certain accidents seem to occur more often than others. Some of the more common types of crashes include:

  • Rear-end crashes: This type of incident occurs when the front of a vehicle collides with the rear of another vehicle. Common causes of this type of accident include speed, aggressive driving and insufficient following distance.
  • Front-impact crashes: As the name suggests, this type of collision takes place when the front end of a vehicle crashes into another vehicle or object. In this type of incident, another car may not be involved if the vehicle hits a utility pole or other object.
  • Side-impact crashes: With side-impact collisions, the front of a vehicle may collide with the side of another vehicle like with “T-bone” crashes, or a vehicle may sideswipe another car.

Of course, numerous other types of accidents could take place, such as rollovers or underride crashes. These three simply represent the most common types of incidents.

Avoiding these crashes

Any of these common types of collisions could lead to serious injuries. Therefore, you certainly want to understand how you could work to avoid these incidents. Tips for avoiding these incidents include:

  • Avoiding rear-end crashes: If someone is following too closely behind your vehicle, move out of the way and let them pass, if possible. Remember to keep an adequate distance between the front of your vehicle and the rear of the one in front of you.
  • Avoiding front-impact crashes: Make sure to accommodate for weather and road conditions and avoid distractions.
  • Avoiding side-impact crashes: You should come to a full stop at stop signs and red traffic lights, and look both ways before entering intersections. You should also remember to check your mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes.

In a perfect world, everyone would do their best to drive safely and avoid any type of car accident. Unfortunately, this world is not perfect, and even if you keep safety a top priority, you could still suffer serious injuries in a crash due to the actions of another driver. If this does happen to you, you may have reason to seek compensation for damages resulting from the incident.
