What To Do After A Truck Accident

On Behalf of | Sep 18, 2017 | Truck Accidents |

If you commute to work in San Antonio, you’ve undoubtedly shared the road with an 18-wheeler at some point. If driving next to a vehicle that big makes you nervous, you are not alone. One distraction, maintenance failure or a poorly secured load is all it takes to cause a serious accident.

While there is nothing you can do to ensure a truck driver is paying attention to the road or a truck has been properly maintained, you can prepare yourself for what to do if you are ever involved in an accident.

  1. Stay where you are and call the police. While you wait for police to arrive, make sure others involved are safe. However, do not apologize for anything. Apologizing could be considered admitting fault. Don’t leave until police say it is OK.
  2. Exchange contact information. Collect names, numbers, license numbers, addresses and other insurance information from everyone else involved in the accident. It is also wise to get contact information of passengers and passersby as well.
  3. Seek medical attention. Even if it doesn’t feel like you were injured, it’s a good idea to see a doctor anyway. Some injuries do not show up right away. Establishing a strong medical history can help your case if you choose to file a personal injury claim later on.
  4. Preserve evidence. Keep your medical records, take photos of the damage to your vehicle, write down everything you remember about the accident, and keep track of how the accident has affected your life.
  5. Talk to an attorney. If you are injured in a truck accident, it is wise to speak to an attorney right away. Truck accident claims are very complicated and often involve multiple insurance companies. An experienced personal injury attorney can ensure your rights and interests are protected.

The next time you find yourself driving near a tractor-trailer on I-35, I-10, I-410 or one of the other major freeways in San Antonio, remember these tips. Being prepared is the best way to stay safe.
